Conversation With The Blues review
***** (out of five!)
It is one of the special mysteries of the blues that Michael Pickett is not very well known in our country although he has been in the business for over thirty years. That could change with his succesful tour in Austria lately and with his new album, Conversation With The Blues . Without a doubt this Canadian musician has to be celebrated as a true "discovery"! With a passionately rough voice and excellent harmonica playing Pickett is the driving force in a mostly original repertoire of the highest calibre. There are delta influences as well as perfectly melodic slow blues, a little soul and gospel, steaming R´n´B and much more. The sound is real "fat" with marvellous horns, tight Hammond B3 and even a string quartet on the title track that would leave B.B. King utterly amazed! Needless to say that Michael Pickett is also a master of acoustic blues ( Cecil & Spadina ). One of the most refreshing blues albums of the year!
